JR East Train Company in Japan issued a new iPhone app "Welcome Suica Mobile" on March 6, 2025. With this smartphone app, you can use your credit card to charge the transportation card, and no need to prepare cash of Japanese for charging it. But... isn't that what we used to have already with Apple Pay's Suica? There was some special features for travlers on it, and also it has 180 days exparation. Let me explain details.

Q1: Can I spend my remaining Welcome Suica Mobile balance at Haneda Airport?
Yes, you can use at many shops and restaurants including convenience stores. You can find out by checking the "payment method" section of each shops and restaurants. tokyo-haneda.com/en/index.html

Q2: Can I use Welcome Suica Mobile at the ticket machines for the Tokaido Shinkansen?
A: No, mobile Suica / Apple Pay Suica can not be used ticket machines or at the counter.

Q3: Can I link my Suica to Smart EX?
A: Yes I tried and I could. Once you register to Welcome Suica Mobile app, you get card No starting from "J". You can copy and paste to Smart EX app. (Payment is through the linked credit card, not Suica balance.)
