Montrose Museum - Scurdie Ness - Doors Open Day 2020
Doors Open Days, which is co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust, will take place in Angus during the weekend of 12 and 13 September 2020.
In light of the circumstances, Doors Open Days is going digital for 2020. So sit back, relax and enjoy seeing cherished historical Angus sites from the comfort of your armchair!
Scurdie Ness Lighthouse was built by David and Thomas Stevenson and was first lit on Tuesday 1 March 1870.
Originally the light was fixed white but was changed to isophase white 60 seconds (light 30 seconds, eclipse 30 seconds) in 1907. The light currently flashes white every 20 seconds and has a range of 23 nautical miles. Scurdie Ness was converted to automatic operation in 1987.
Join ANGUSalive Museums Exhibitions Lead, Rachel Jackson, for a video presentation which showcases some of the interesting objects on display for our Scurdie Ness Lighthouse exhibition at Montrose Museum. Hear why the townspeople of Montrose campaigned for a lighthouse, see some of the equipment that the keepers used to maintain the light and look at the beautifully illustrated diary from 1911 by a girl staying by the lighthouse.
