ISCHEMIA Explained Simply
In the context of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), ischemia and injury represent different stages and implications of the condition. Ischemia refers to insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle, typically due to a blockage in one or more coronary arteries. This reduced blood flow means the heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen and nutrients to meet its metabolic needs. Ischemia is often the precursor to injury and can cause chest pain (angina). It is potentially reversible if blood flow is restored promptly.
In contrast, injury in the context of AMI refers to actual damage to the heart muscle cells due to prolonged ischemia. When ischemia persists and blood flow is not restored in time, myocardial cells begin to suffer irreversible damage.
