Dull Knives do cut better if you wish to inflict pain - whether that be to yourself or another - with that premise, it is quite a dark song.

@Thontor

In this track, the Queen is at a breaking point, completely losing control as her descent into darkness reaches new depths. She feels emotionally numb yet consumed by agony, caught between pain and detachment. The lyrics reflect her inner turmoil—she’s harming herself, but she’s so far gone that even the pain doesn’t register properly. The phrase "Feeling for nothing at all!" highlights this contradiction: she’s feeling something, but it’s an overwhelming emptiness rather than a tangible emotion.

The title Dull Knives (Cut Better) itself is a contradiction, much like the Queen’s state of mind. While it may seem counterintuitive, dull knives can actually cause more damage than sharp ones. A sharp blade slices cleanly, but a dull knife requires more force, leading to jagged, uneven cuts that tear rather than slice. This makes the act of cutting more painful and less controlled—mirroring the Queen’s mental and emotional instability. She isn’t in control of herself anymore, and the damage she’s inflicting isn’t clean or precise—it’s messy, chaotic, and all-consuming.

Behind the scenes, The Warning talked about how they struggled to extend Dull Knives but ultimately decided to keep it short because adding more to it made the song feel less impactful. They did attempt to include a solo and return to the chorus, but nothing fit naturally, and they didn’t want to "fix something that wasn’t broken." If fans find the song too short, the band jokingly recommended simply playing it again.

Love the vocal harmonies in this song. Low and monotone. They fit perfectly and add to the darkness of the song.

@UltraHD.7

Still one of my favorites from them, also one of their heaviest imo.
I think it was Pau who said something like "if you think this song is too short, just listen to it again" 😊

@elgonwilliams7624

This is a fan favorite from the album. Most recently in their concerts (Pepsi Center CDMX 2023 and Auditorio Nacional CDMX 2025) they bridged Dust to Dust together with Dull Knives. It's pretty cool. My take on the song is that the main character is contemplating suicide by slashing her wrists, realizing that a dull blade makes a ragged cut that would produce a nasty wound that would bleed out quicker. I don't know if that theory is true, but it seems plausible. At any rate, it would be more painful, and from the line about keeping he thorns, that seems to be a her goal, inflicting as much pain upon herself as possible.

@makidoko

Dull kinves cut better, because it's more painful, and she needs it, that's why she's plucking roses but keep the thorns. That's a disturbing song about scarification, physical pain to bypass emotional pain.
I'm surprised that yet, nobody told you to check the Pepsi Center one... So check the Pespi Center one ; it's a double shot in one Dust To Dust / Dull Knives. Do yourself a favor, especially if Dull Knives became your favorite one, which is obvious, because that's the last one you heard ; that's part of the natural process of being fan of The Warning.

@danieljodrey

Ale's performance is pure ROCK STAR ⭐ Young Pau is pure brilliance 💎 and Dany is on 🔥

@keenian6164

great album... a concept album so well written musically and lyrically..... at that age was MINDBLOWING!

@Dale-m9t

This album has such an exploration of the different rock genres that just for that alone it is awesome. On top of that it tells a story??!!! Mind-blowing....

@jackjernigan-ks6bl

First let me say I really enjoy your uncluttered presentations. And since you like DK(CB), I would suggest listening to Dull Knives from The Warning Cave for De(Tour). The De(Tour) was a virtual festival to raise money for charity during the covid pandemic. Dozens of well-known musicians (Ringo Starr, Slash, Sean Lennon, Cheap Trick, etc) participated, including Lzzy Hale, and as a result, The Warning was subsequently selected to open for Halestorm on tour. The De(Tour) version is a raw basement banger.

@AlfonsoAyala-l7m

Keep Rockin' The Warning my friend 🤘⚡🤘

@teuchterloon9130

Glad you finally got to Dull Knives. This is my favourite track off the album and they do it so well live. There are probably better, newer live versions of this, but I guess seeing the performance from when the album was released makes sense.

🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥

@titifatal

Thank you. Dull knife cuts hurt more and do more damage. The queen is confused and turning against herself. Pau is doing the whispers in the queen's head. The whole thing is genius, really.

@keenian6164

you should ckeck (also for yourself) the Pespi Center 2023 live version to see the difference!!!

@warrenschulze350

At barely 3 minutes, this song packs more punch than most other bands songs that are wayyyy longer......A tribute to their song writing genius! Who are these Kids?!

@darrinashby9019

I really like seeing little Ale singing with attitude. She gets a little more reserved as she gets older, but thats ok, she still provides fantastic harmonies.

@tpro7224

This album so solid start to finish. 🤘
